Service type

Changi Airport to Orchard Road is 20 km and takes 20 to 30 minutes outside the peak, by the East Coast Parkway and into the city from the east. It is the most-booked route on this site, because Orchard holds the largest concentration of hotels in Singapore and almost every one of them has restricted kerbside access, which makes the drop-off point the part worth getting right.

A private transfer on this route is a fixed fare from S$90, with the driver meeting you inside your arrival terminal and dropping you at the hotel porch rather than on the road outside.

How long does it take from Changi to Orchard Road?

Twenty to thirty minutes for most of the day. The drive runs the East Coast Parkway along the coast, then turns inland either at Nicoll Highway or via the Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway when the ECP is heavy. The distance barely changes; the traffic does.

Where the driver drops you on Orchard Road

Orchard’s hotels sit along a three-kilometre stretch with different access arrangements, and kerbside stopping is restricted along most of the main road.

Upper Orchard and Tanglin
Shangri-La, Goodwood Park and the hotels around Tanglin Road. Access is from the side roads rather than Orchard Boulevard, and the porches are set back, so the drop is at the door.
Central Orchard
The hotels attached to ION, Ngee Ann City and Wisma Atria share a congested stretch and their porches are entered from Orchard Turn or Paterson Road. Give the hotel name and the driver takes the correct approach.
Somerset and lower Orchard
Hotels near Somerset and Dhoby Ghaut are entered from Killiney Road, Devonshire or Somerset Road. During events at the Istana or a road closure on Orchard, access shifts to the parallel roads.
Orchard serviced apartments and residences
These use guardhouse access, so the block or unit number matters more than the street address.

If your accommodation is a residence rather than a hotel, give the block number at booking. Condominium security will not let a car past the gate on a name alone.

Which vehicle for this route?

Orchard trips are usually short on distance and long on luggage, because most passengers are arriving for a stay rather than a meeting.

Coming back to Changi at the end of a Singapore stay, count your bags again. Orchard is where the extra suitcase gets bought.

Who takes this route

Leisure travellers checking into an Orchard hotel

The arrival is the first hour of a holiday and the queue at the pickup bay is the worst possible start to it. Pre-booking replaces that with a name board and a car that is already parked.

Business travellers with a same-day meeting

Orchard is 10 to 15 minutes from Raffles Place outside the peak, so a morning arrival can drop bags and be in the CBD before lunch. If the day continues, an hourly booking from the airport works out cheaper than three legs.

Families on a long-haul arrival

Two adults, two children, four cases and a pram is a Business Van, and the child seats are fitted before the vehicle leaves.

The MRT is genuinely good on this route if you are travelling light: take the East West Line to City Hall, then the North South Line to Orchard. With two large cases and a child, it is not.

Orchard Road to Changi Airport: the return leg

Work back from the check-in cut-off. Long-haul check-in generally closes 60 minutes before departure, and Changi asks passengers to be at the terminal about three hours ahead for long-haul flights.

Flight timeSuggested Orchard departure
08:00Leave Orchard about 05:15
12:00Leave about 09:15, allowing for the tail of the morning peak
18:00Leave about 14:45, before the evening peak builds
23:55Leave about 20:45

Add 15 minutes if you are leaving between 17:30 and 19:30 on a weekday. The driver waits at the porch for 15 minutes from the booked time at no charge.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Orchard Road from Changi Airport?

About 20 km, or 20 to 30 minutes by car outside the peak.

How much is a taxi from Changi to Orchard?

A taxi uses a metered fare plus the airport surcharge, with higher charges during late-night and peak periods. A fixed private transfer is S$90 and is known before you travel.

Where will the driver meet me?

Inside your terminal's arrival hall at the exit gate, holding a name board, with a message showing exactly where they are standing.

Can the driver drop me at the hotel entrance?

Yes. The drop is at the hotel porch, not on Orchard Road.

Is there a cheaper way?

The MRT takes about 45 minutes with one change and a walk at the end. It is practical with a cabin bag but harder with checked luggage.

Can I book Orchard to Changi as a return?

Yes, on the same confirmation, at a fixed fare each way.

How long will the driver wait if my flight is late?

60 minutes from touchdown, free, and the pickup time follows the flight rather than the schedule.

Can I stop somewhere on the way?

An extra stop on the way costs S$20 and includes 15 minutes of waiting. More than that is better booked hourly.
